The One-Handed Backhand Groundstroke - "Arm extends, while wrist creates the spin"

Many 1-handed players tend to “swat” the ball when hitting rather than continuing to drive through the swing. Remember the court is longer than the net is high.
  • Notice the first move for the player is to change to his eastern backhand grip(personal preference) and begin racquet preparation and hip turn.
  • Now the body is completely turned with the weight on the back foot and the dominant shoulder drops with the elbow close to the body and the racquet moving up for a short loop to generate racquet speed.
  • Next, you see the player drop the head of the racquet to get under the ball in order to be able to “brush up” on the ball.
  • Now the weight is beginning to shift forward with the racquet driving into the ball. The wrist is starting to “whip up” at this stage to create topspin, while the arm is still driving “through the ball” for good depth.
  • As the dominant arm drives forward, the non-dominant arm, moves in the opposite direction to keep good balance during the swing.
  • In the finish, the racquet is above the head of the player, but not behind him, and the hips are open to the court for quicker recovery and the weight of the player is now in front.
