"Reach for the ball" You’ve all heard it, “point at the ball.” Unfortunately, simply “pointing” to the ball, doesn’t always promote a good shoulder turn. When you “reach” for the ball as if attempting to catch it, it forces you to turn the shoulders into the shot more and also increases your balance before the shot. Any shot played from your dominant side (right side for righties, left side for lefties) should have an aggressive shoulder turn led by your non-dominant hand which will allow you to “uncoil” into the shot during your swing for a stronger, more balanced shot. When you release your “reach” be sure to keep your non-dominant arm still in front of the body. “Swimming” your arm back (pulling your arm behind you) can cause a premature opening to the swing and loss of control. |
